Midjourney's position in AI image generation is a bit like Figma's in design—it may not be the cheapest or most convenient, but in terms of image quality it's a tier above the competition. DALL-E 3 does well with realism, Stable Diffusion has the best controllability, but when it comes to "this image has aesthetic taste" or "this can be used directly in commercial projects," Midjourney is still in a league of its own.
Midjourney V7 (released early 2026) made major improvements in several key dimensions: first, natural rendering of people and hands — the "six fingers" meme is almost entirely resolved in V7; second, the Style Reference feature — you upload an image as a style reference, and Midjourney can precisely mimic its color palette, composition, and lighting, and it's not just "looking similar" but genuinely close at an aesthetic level; finally, text rendering — previously AI-generated text in images was mostly gibberish, but V7 can now generate readable titles and short text.
What most satisfies expert users about Midjourney is its control over "atmosphere" and "texture." You can precisely adjust stylization levels, character consistency, and personalization weights via parameters like --sref, --cref, --p. Real masters can combine these into their own "visual language" — every output looks like it was shot by the same person and designed by the same designer. This consistency is essential in commercial projects—brand visuals, advertising assets, product renderings.
But Midjourney's biggest complaint remains unchanged: it requires Discord. You open Discord → type /imagine → write a prompt → wait tens of seconds → pick one from four images. This workflow was acceptable in 2022 — back then, everyone thought AI image generation was novel. By 2026, competitors all have their own web interfaces, and while Midjourney now has a web version too, its features are still less complete than Discord. If you need to generate 50+ images a day, the Discord workflow will make you want to throw your keyboard.
Also, pricing isn't cheap. Standard at $30/mo (unlimited generation in slow mode) and Pro at $60/mo is the entry barrier for expert users. DALL-E 3 is included in ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo, and Stable Diffusion is open source and free—Midjourney's pricing does seem high to casual users who "just use it once in a while." That said, if you need images that are "usable," free Stable Diffusion is enough; if you need images that are "beautiful," Midjourney is worth the price.
