Brave is the privacy browser for people who don't want to think about privacy. Unlike Firefox, which requires you to configure privacy settings, or Chrome, which is a privacy nightmare by default, Brave ships with ad blocking and tracker protection turned on from the first launch. You install it, and you're protected—no extensions, no about:config tweaks, no research required.
The built-in ad blocker is genuinely good. It blocks YouTube ads (yes, ALL of them), cookie consent pop-ups, and cross-site trackers without breaking most websites. When a site does break, Shields (Brave's blocking panel) lets you adjust protection per-site with one click. It's the most frictionless privacy experience available.
Brave's Tor integration deserves special mention. Enabling a "Private Window with Tor" routes your traffic through the Tor network, providing anonymity that goes beyond standard private browsing. For journalists, researchers, and anyone who needs genuine anonymity, this is a feature no other mainstream browser offers natively.
The controversial part: Brave Rewards. You can opt in to view privacy-respecting ads and earn BAT (Basic Attention Token) cryptocurrency. While the concept is interesting—you get paid for your attention instead of Google—the crypto integration feels at odds with Brave's clean privacy-first image. The good news is that it's entirely opt-in; you can use Brave forever without ever touching BAT.
